Education:

The education and training for veterinary inspector in France is provided by the National School of Veterinary Services, called the ENSV. Since 1973, the ENSV is in charge of the initial and ongoing training of veterinary services inspector. Furthermore, the ENSV provides vocational training and research for the design, development, implementation and evaluation of collective action in food and in veterinary public health for all stakeholders (public and private actors).

Please see the following for more details concerning this school: ENSV.

Core domain: Veterinary Public Health

Veterinary public health was defined by the WHO in 1999 as “the sum of all contributions to the physical, mental and social well-being of humans through an understanding and application of veterinary science”.

Veterinary public health is an essential part of public health, and Human health is inextricably linked to animal health and production. About 75% of the new diseases that have affected humans over the past 10 years have been caused by pathogens originating from an animal or from products of animal origin. Many of these diseases have the potential to spread through various means over long distances and to become global problems. Veterinary inspectors help protect human food and animal feed chains and preserve the health and welfare of the national herd. They apply and enforce controls that protect public health, animal health and animal welfare, and ensure compliance with legislation – both EU and national.

To sum up the work area of veterinary inspector includes:

  • Animal health and animal welfare: diagnosis, surveillance and control of zoonoses and major animal disease, epidemiology, control, prevention, management of domestic and wild animal populations, feed, management of health aspects of laboratory animal facilities and diagnostic laboratories.
  • Protection of the environment: control, protection of drinking-water and the environment, production and control of biological products and medical devices.
  • Food safety and quality: food protection, surveillance and prevention, control of food processing sector, Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point system, risk management, animal and carcass examination, inspection of strutures engaged in slaughtering livestock and processing meat.
